Maya Peled Raz

Beyond academia, I am actively engaged in clinical ethics. I serve as a clinical ethicist and chair the Ethics Committee at Bnei Zion Medical Center in Haifa. Additionally, I am Vice Chair of the Ethics Committees of the IDF Medical Corps and Meuhedet HMO. Previously, I held roles as Chair of the Ethics Committee at the Galilee Medical Center and Vice Chair of the Ministry of Health’s Haifa District Ethics Committee, mentoring successors in both positions before stepping down.

From 2022 to 2024, I was honored to serve as a medical ethics expert on the Israeli National Health Council, personally appointed by the Minister of Health under Section 49(a)(6) of the National Health Insurance Law. Since 2019, I also serve as an ethics reviewer for the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe ethics appraisal schemes.

My community based professional collaborations include extensive work with the Israeli Ministry of Health and the Israel Bar Association, focusing on legal and ethical training for healthcare professionals and regulatory development. I spearheaded the drafting of two pivotal Ministry of Health circulars: Circular 10/2017, addressing the rights of intersex individuals in healthcare, and Circular 09/2018, on Clinical Ethics Committees. Additionally, I contributed to the formulation of two legislative amendment bills: Private Bill 3798/24 concerning the Dying Patient Act and the Ministry of Health's draft amendment to the Patient’s Rights Act.

I have participated in several national working groups of significant impact. These include co-chairing the Association of University Heads (VERA) working group on academic research ethics committees, whose recommendations were adopted nationwide in 2022. I also contributed to the joint working group of the Israeli Medical Association and Israeli Nursing Association Ethics Bureaus on the shackling of incarcerated patients in hospitals and helped establish a national working group providing ethical guidance for research involving children without parental consent.
